Montenegro is known across Europe for the Bay of Kotor, walled old towns, and Adriatic beaches, but the country offers so much more. Beyond the coast, fast-flowing rivers, rocky mountain trails, narrow canyons and sheltered bays are waiting to be explored.
For UAE travellers searching for active things to do in Montenegro, this guide covers five adventure activities, a unique floating wine bar and the practical information needed to plan your holiday.
1. White-Water Rafting on the Tara River

Part of the Tara River Canyon lies within UNESCO-listed Durmitor National Park, creating the setting for one of Montenegro’s best-known outdoor activities.
The day begins with a scenic drive from the coast into northern Montenegro. After breakfast and a safety briefing, participants change into their rafting gear and join a licensed skipper on the river. Energetic rapids are balanced by calmer sections where you can appreciate the forested cliffs and waterfalls surrounding the canyon.
The shared experience lasts up to 13 hours, including transportation, breakfast, lunch and rafting. Groups can include up to 20 participants, with a minimum of four required for the activity to operate. Beginners and experienced rafters can both participate.
Best for: Travellers who want a complete day of outdoor adventure and mountain scenery.
Before you go: Bring identification, sunscreen, a swimsuit, towel and camera. Listen carefully during the safety briefing and follow the skipper’s instructions.
2. Hiking in Durmitor National Park

Durmitor National Park is one of the best places for hiking in Montenegro. Its landscape includes rocky peaks, glacial lakes, deep valleys and viewpoints stretching across the surrounding mountains.
This guided experience follows either the Prutaš or Crvena Greda route. The guides make the final selection according to the weather, trail conditions and ability of the group.
The hike covers approximately 4 to 8 kilometres, with an elevation gain of around 424 to 686 metres. Despite the relatively short distance, the rocky terrain makes this a medium-to-hard activity. Transportation, two meals and the national park entrance fee are included.
Best for: Active travellers who are comfortable walking across uneven mountain terrain.
Before you go: Wear proper hiking shoes and carry two litres of water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat and warm clothing. This activity is not recommended for travellers with a fear of heights or relevant health concerns.
3. Canyoning in Nevidio Canyon

Nevidio Canyon provides a more demanding alternative to traditional hiking. Hidden in Montenegro’s mountainous interior, its narrow passages, rock formations and natural pools create an exciting natural obstacle course.
A guided canyoning experience may involve swimming, climbing, sliding and moving through sections shaped by the Mala Komarnica River. It requires physical effort, confidence in the water and the ability to follow the guide’s instructions.
Nevidio is one of Montenegro’s signature canyoning locations. It should only be explored with qualified guides and the correct technical equipment.
Best for: Confident swimmers and physically active travellers looking for a challenging experience.
Before you go: Canyoning depends on weather and water levels. The activity may be adjusted or postponed when conditions are unsuitable.
4. Kayaking in the Bay of Kotor

Kayaking is one of the most accessible outdoor activities in Montenegro. It offers a slower way to explore the Bay of Kotor while still providing a moderate level of physical activity.
From the water, you can see historic stone villages, waterfront buildings and steep mountains surrounding the bay. Routes vary between operators and may include swimming stops or time near smaller waterfront settlements.
Kayaking is available throughout the Bay of Kotor and along Montenegro’s wider Adriatic coastline.
Best for: Couples, families and first-time kayakers looking for a scenic activity.
Before you go: Morning sessions may offer calmer water and cooler temperatures. Apply sunscreen and keep personal belongings inside a waterproof bag.
5. Tandem Paragliding Over Budva

Paragliding offers a completely different perspective of Montenegro’s Adriatic coastline. From above, you can see the beaches, towns and mountains surrounding Budva in a single view.
The Budva tandem experience takes off from Brajići, approximately 731 metres above sea level, before descending towards Bečići Beach. The flight normally lasts around 10 to 15 minutes, although additional time is needed for transportation, preparation and the safety briefing.
First-time participants can fly with an instructor, so previous paragliding experience is not normally required.
Best for: Travellers looking for a short aerial adventure with impressive coastal views.
Before you go: Paragliding is weather-dependent. Avoid scheduling it on your final day in case the departure needs to be postponed.
Slow Down at Montenegro’s Floating Wine Bar

After several days of rafting, hiking and exploring, Montenegro’s floating wine bar offers a slower way to enjoy the Bay of Kotor.
Kraken Underwater Cellar operates a floating bar reached by a short boat transfer from the coast. Guests can taste wine aged beneath the waters of the bay, enjoy seafood and swim directly from the floating platform. Some of its wines spend approximately one year underwater before being served.
Best for: Adult travellers, couples and wine enthusiasts looking for a unique experience on the water.
Before you go: Reserve in advance and bring swimwear. The bar may close during strong winds or heavy rain and is not recommended for guests with mobility difficulties.
Helpful Information for Planning Your Montenegro Holiday
Best time for outdoor activities
May to October generally offers the best conditions for outdoor activities in Montenegro. Late spring and early autumn bring pleasant temperatures and fewer visitors, while July and August are the busiest months along the coast.
Average maximum temperatures range from approximately 19°C in May to 29°C in August. Durmitor and other mountain areas can be much cooler than Budva, Kotor and Tivat.
Rafting and hiking conditions
The Tara River rafting season usually runs from April to October. Spring snowmelt generally creates higher water levels and faster rapids, while conditions can become calmer as the season progresses.
Durmitor’s hiking routes are usually most accessible during the warmer months. Mountain weather can change quickly, so guides may alter the route because of rain, wind, poor visibility or trail conditions.
Travelling from the UAE
Flydubai currently lists services between Dubai and Tivat. Flight schedules and availability can vary by season, so check the operating dates before arranging accommodation and activities.
Tivat Airport is convenient for Kotor, Budva and Tivat. Podgorica Airport can be useful when combining the coast with inland destinations.
Entry requirements
UAE nationals can enter Montenegro without a visa for up to 90 days with a valid travel document.
From 1 May to 31 October 2026, eligible non-Emirati UAE residents may enter visa-free for up to 10 days if they:
Have held UAE residence continuously for at least three years before arrival
Arrive and depart on direct flights operated by an airline based in the UAE
Carry confirmation of a tourist arrangement
Have proof of return travel to the country of departure
Hold valid health insurance
This is a temporary visa exemption, not a visa on arrival. If these conditions are not met, travellers may require a visa or need to qualify under another exemption.
For example, holders of an eligible valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit may enter Montenegro for up to 30 days, provided their permission remains valid for the full stay. Entry cannot extend beyond the expiry of the supporting visa or residence permit.
Because entry policies can change, travellers should verify the latest requirements before booking.
What to pack
Your packing list will depend on the selected activity, but useful items include:
Comfortable sportswear
Proper walking or hiking shoes
Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
Refillable water bottle
Light waterproof jacket
Warmer layer for mountain areas
Swimwear and a towel
Waterproof bag for electronics
Personal medication
Planning mistakes to avoid
Underestimating the journey between the coast and northern Montenegro
Booking a demanding activity without checking its fitness requirements
Wearing casual trainers on rocky mountain trails
Arranging a weather-dependent activity on the final day
Packing only for coastal temperatures
Assuming every UAE resident has the same entry requirements
Booking popular summer activities too late
Which Montenegro Activity Should You Choose?
Choose Tara River rafting if you want a complete full-day experience with mountain scenery and time on the water.
Durmitor hiking is better suited to travellers who enjoy challenging trails and elevated viewpoints. Nevidio Canyon offers the highest level of physical adventure, while Bay of Kotor kayaking provides a gentler option for couples and families.
Tandem paragliding is ideal when you want a shorter activity that still feels memorable. For a more relaxed day, reserve a table at the floating wine bar and enjoy the Bay of Kotor at a slower pace.
Montenegro’s compact size makes it possible to combine several of these experiences within one holiday. Allow enough time between activities, keep some flexibility for weather changes and book popular summer dates in advance. Ready to explore Montenegro beyond the coast?
