This 8-day self-drive journey around Iceland’s ring road combines dramatic natural landscapes with cultural highlights. Starting in Reykjavik, the route leads through fjords, volcanoes, and mountain passes to Akureyri and the geological wonders of Lake Mývatn. You’ll explore lava fields, hot springs, fishing villages, and the immense Vatnajökull National Park. Highlights include Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach, black-sand shores, and the famous Golden Circle. Depending on the season, you may witness the Northern Lights in winter or enjoy the endless daylight of summer.

Day 01: REYKJAVIK
Private transfer from Keflavik airport to your hotel in Reykjavik.
Free time to explore the capital city.

Day 02: REYKJAVIK, HVALFJÖRÐUR, BORGARNES, AKUREYRI
Collect your self-drive vehicle and begin the journey.
Drive west along Hvalfjörður Fjord and stop at Borgarnes.
Hike the Grábrók volcano crater surrounded by lava fields.
Visit Glaumbær turf house farm and folk museum.
Continue through fjords and mountain passes to Akureyri.
Explore Akureyri town at leisure.
Overnight in Akureyri.

Day 03: AKUREYRI, GOÐAFOSS, LAKE MÝVATN
Explore Akureyri with views over Eyjafjörður Fjord.
Optional: Whale-watching tour (April–October).
Visit Goðafoss, “Waterfall of the Gods.”
Explore Lake Mývatn’s lava formations, pseudo-craters, and tephra cones.
Relax at Mývatn Nature Baths with stunning views.
Evening possibility of Northern Lights (September–April).

Day 04: DIMMUBORGIR, NÁMASKARÐ, EGILSSTAÐIR
Walk through the lava labyrinth of Dimmuborgir, “dark castles.”
Visit the bubbling mud pools and steaming vents of Námaskarð.
Drive through uninhabited highlands and lunar-like landscapes.
Seasonal detour to Dettifoss waterfall (June–August).
Overnight in Egilsstaðir.

Day 05: EAST FJORDS, VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK
Drive through dramatic East Fjords and small fishing villages.
Stop at a stone and mineral collection.
Continue to Vatnajökull National Park, Europe’s largest glacier.
Optional: Amphibian boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.
Evening possibility of Northern Lights (September–April).
Overnight in Southeast Iceland.

Day 06: JÖKULSÁRLÓN, DIAMOND BEACH, SOUTH COAST, REYKJAVIK
Visit Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon with floating icebergs.
Seasonal: Boat ride among icebergs (May–September).
Walk along Diamond Beach where icebergs wash ashore.
Drive across Eldhraun lava fields and the southern plains.
Experience the Icelandic Lava Show in Vik.
Visit Reynisfjara black-sand beach, Skógafoss, and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls.
Return to Reykjavik via Thingvellir National Park.
